There is such a wealth of wonderful accommodation on Madeira and The Azores and we have selected the very best, not just for their overall quality, superb amenities and high service standards – but for their heritage and unique character. We hope you enjoy!

Belmond Reid’s Palace is the Ritz, Raffles and the Waldorf Astoria all rolled into one. Reid’s has been keeping the UK & Europe’s ‘crème de la crème’ happy since it opened its doors in the late 1800s. The Guest Book is most impressive; Sir Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, David Lloyd George,  Roger Moore (when he wasn’t filming ‘James Bond’), Gregory Peck (when he was filming ‘Moby Dick’ – parts of the movie were shot at sea near Madeira) and dramatist George Bernard Shaw.

With the most magnificent view over the Bay of Funchal, Reid’s exudes an air of genteel tranquillity and restive retreat with age-old traditions preserved such as taking ‘Afternoon Tea’ on the balcony with panoramic views of Funchal and the harbour.

The latest addition to Funchal’s panoply of wonderful hotels is the impressive Savoy Palace, the newest member of ‘The Leading Hotels of the World’ and a truly exceptional experience. This imposing edifice commands the most magnificent views of the city & harbour combined with all the amenities you would expect from such a 5-star establishment. The Galáxia Skypool is where you can swim to the horizon or the Galáxia Skybar for a superb dining and cocktail selection. And all this is within a short walk from Funchal’s centre. The Palace’s contemporary interiors are the work of Madeira’s premier, award-winning designer, Nini Andrade Silva. Born in Funchal, Nini has worked in New York, London, Paris, South Africa and Denmark and at the Savoy Palace, she was given the chance to bring her unique talent back to her roots.

Surrounded by its own ‘nature’ gardens and a magnificent 18-hole golf course, Casa Velha do Palheiro is a country house hotel with the ambience and restorative qualities of a Grand era. The main building has been lovingly restored from an 18th-century hunting lodge with 33 rooms and five suites, each one singular in its style and personality. On Casa Velha’s doorstep are gorgeous, manicured gardens that open out to over 20 kilometres of nature trails and pony trecking paths. There’s even a tea house at the bottom of the garden.

Casa Velha do Palheiro is perfectly placed to explore Madeira! It’s only 20-minutes from Madeira’s International Airport and you can be in town in 10-minutes. But here among the hills and the 120-hectare Palheiro Nature Estate, you should stop to draw breath and feel the benefit of this very special property.  If you need even more of a helping hand, there is a fully-serviced spa with indoor and outdoor pools and various classes such as QiGong, Yoga and Tai Chi. Casa Velha is a unique place to unwind where the only noise you are likely to hear is birdsong…

Located on a high, natural promontory with direct access to the sea, the  5-star Cliff Bay Hotel is the jewel in the crown of PortoBay Hotels & Resorts! Offering a 2 Michelin stars ‘Il Gallo d’Oro’ and sprawling gardens with numerous hidden coves, this is a wonderful, comprehensive place to escape. And there’s always a magnificent view over the bay of Funchal.

Next door, ‘Les Suites’ is the new five-star complex run alongside The Cliff Bay Hotel. It offers the new  ‘Avista’ restaurant. Two century-old houses have been transformed into Les Suites and the new Avista Restaurant set in lush gardens with an infinity pool and unique views of the sea and the famous Funchal Bay. With its 23 luxury suites, Les Suites promises an exceptional experience with comfort, tranquillity and history in its elegant and exclusive suites.

On the main island of St. Miguel, the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is tucked away in the mystic Furnas Valley with its volcanic boilers (small geysers), water springs and scenic walkways. Part of the beautiful Terra Nostra Botanical Park, all you have to do is take a short stroll from the hotel and you’re in the most enchanting environment.

The Terra Nostra is considered the finest hotel in the Azores and for very good reason. Located in Furnas Valley, the hotel is nestled in one of the world’s top “Green Retreats,” as deemed by Condé Nast Traveler. This is the 18th century Terra Nostra Garden, in perfect harmony with nature.

The TN Wellness Place is the perfect spa for you to decompress from the daily stress and enjoy a deep sense of relaxation that seems to go hand-in-hand with The Azores. In addition to the signature treatments, performed in total immersion with nature in the natural jacuzzies and the thermal pool, the Spa also features a wide variety of treatments from face and body care to holistic therapies. There’s a skilled team to advise you on the best treatments that are tailored to your individual requirements.

Homes hang like bird-boxes and ribbonesque roads drape loosely around vertiginous slopes. As the plane flew closer to the island, a structure came into view, a series of massive pillars rising from the sea. Looking like a beachfront Parthenon.
